The generated signals may be processed and decoded (e.g. detected and interpreted) to recover the symbology data of interest. In general, the optical scanning devices electro-optically or acoustically scan a beam or laser beam over a symbol and sense the reflections caused by the symbol. The resulting reflected waveform is converted to an electronic representation of the symbol that is then decoded.
Many current optical scanning techniques use beam steering to control the orientation of a scanning beam in order to read, for example, the unique bar code symbol on an object. In one form of such scanning techniques, a light beam is directed from a light source, such as a light emitting diode (LED), and is modulated by a rotating light pattern (e.g., a rotating reflector or grating) to produce a beam or beam pattern that sweeps across a symbol. In another form of such scanning techniques, a beam or laser beam is modulated by a non-rotating reflector or grating, and the orientation of the reflector or grating is rotated to direct the beam or beam pattern across a symbol.
Many current optical scanning techniques also utilize beam steering to direct or sweep the scanning beam in a zig-zag, linear, or other pattern across the symbol. Zig-zagging the scanning beam reduces the likelihood of the scanning beam striking a “dead-spot” on the symbol. This technique also can permit a reading device to distinguish between the portions of the symbol that are scanned by the scanning beam.
Many current optical scanning techniques utilize the beam or laser beam to scan across the symbol in a series of horizontal and/or vertical sweeps. The entire symbol is detected during each sweep, or during each sub-array of horizontal and/or vertical be359ba680
